National Institute of Occupational Health

Details about three projects at the National Institute of Occupational Health: Musculoskeletal research, Working Environment Problems in the Health Care Sector and Return to work (RTW) effective RTW after long-term sickness absence cursed by musculoskeletal disorders.

Musculoskeletal research at AMI

AMI focuses on 3 fields of activities:

  1. Cognitive, organizational and physical dimensions as risk factor in the development of musculoskeletal disorders and related sick leave
  2. Primary prevention conducted in intervention studies with focus on workability, i.e. individual capacity in relation to exposure profile
  3. Muscle pain development and rehabilitation

Working Environment Problems in the Health Care Sector

This research group targets major working environment problems in the health care sector e.g. accidents, musculoskeletal disorders, violence at work, sickness-absence and shift work.

Within the area of musculoskeletal disorders emphasis in on low back problems related to patient handling and movement.  Projects are using a wide range of methodological approaches, including:

  1. Intervention studies aimed at identifying evidence-based practices for safe patient handling and movement
  2. Return to work  research
  3. Mechanistic studies of back stability and motor control issues
  4. Regulatory approaches in the prevention of work related musculoskeletal disorders.
